  Chen is often referred to as the first oil painter in Taiwan's art history, and also as Taiwan's Van Gogh. He was familiar with the anatomy of the human body and was able to portray it in accurate proportions. Orange was used as the background color, which was close to the flesh tones. Fluid brush strokes were used to create the contours in rhythmic, well-proportioned lines. This can be compared to the sketches of the human figure by sculptor Rodin.
  He remained passionate about painting throughout his life. He once said that, "It is my duty to create art works. If I cannot live for art and die for art, can I be considered an artist?" From this quote, this painter's enthusiasm for his work is revealed, as is the reason he was considered to be like Van Gogh.
